Gen X, grit, and pragmatism.

Huge helicopter blades swung around overhead. The Huey had been fired up and the blades were beginning to pick up speed. The engine whined and the blades thwacked through the air. Three other men jumped in and the pilot lifted off the ground carrying them off base to their intended destination…Hue City, Vietnam.

The men had asked for a Jeep to go explore the city and had been denied. They Huey, it turned out, would do.

Stationed at Camp Evans in 1970, they had jumped into a helicopter, radioed the tower, and flown there after they had been told they…

Medium’s new List feature is a window into your writing

Medium rolled out a new feature. Lists.

I have been traveling for much of July and hadn’t had the time to check it out or investigate how it could be useful to me until yesterday.

I have different articles saved on my reading list that I wanted to get back to. I have writing tips saved as well. These are obvious. We all want to be able to reference a great read or writing tips when we sit down at our computer. But here is what Lists gave me that I hadn’t thought of.

I began organizing my articles by…

Stop looking for happiness. Start with being content.

We are all looking for happiness. Isn’t that what everyone wants?

Companies have made a fortune from us by saying they will deliver on that promise. They sell us everything from clothing to medication all with the allure of happiness. Rarely does it work.

So, how do we get happy? I have news for you. It’s not the sunshine, the beach, the workout studio, the large house, the private jet to the football game. It is none of those things.

You can be happy no matter where you live. I live in a tiny ass condo. It’s like 700 square…

#5 — you get to yell

Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. You’re not really into sports. You never paid much attention. It’s boring; there are a lot of rules. Maybe you just don’t care. But just maybe — you’re not so quick to brush it off this time.

Maybe you give it a go?

If that’s a hard no, I totally get it. But check it out. There is much to be gained by becoming a sports fan and little to lose. You’ll even get to have your own space without interruptions. No one can boss you around when the game is on or…

Avoid becoming the next soggy American

Traveling is one of the best things on Earth. It is why I go to work every day. I’m just earning money to put toward my next trip.

It doesn’t even matter where it is. I’ll go almost anywhere, happily. Even if it’s hot. Even if it’s cold. It doesn’t matter to me, I’m in.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes while traveling. I spent the coldest weekend of my life in Scotland. It rained for two days. All I had to wear was a wool sweater and a heavy peacoat — not ideal. My friends and I tried to…

You really are the best thing in my closet.

Dear Favorite Pair of Jeans,

I have loved you from the moment I first tried you on.

I saw you on the table at Target from a distance. I was just going in the store to pick up bleach but there you were. I stopped. I looked at you. Levis, Boyfriend Fit, your tag stated. Your color was perfect. Medium blue with wear and tear but not too much.

I picked you up, grabbed the waistband, and put it around my neck to see if you would fit without actually trying you on. The waistband fit around my neck so…

Do you feel your shoulders inch up as you look at your calendar? Me too.

It’s here! Summer, the vaccine, getting back to normal. Let’s goooooo!

Bye COVID! We’re in America with every opportunity to get vaccinated and get on with our lives. We all need a vacation from our homes and our families. We are ready to throw our laptops into the pool. Jump in the car, see friends, get the kids back to camp.

Let’s plan all that fun!

As your calendar fills up with lunch plans, workouts, and vacations you may start to realize that your house is a mess and your laundry pile is huge.

My summer calendar filled up quickly…

Stargazing and the road less-traveled

We popped our camping chairs out in the parking lot as the sun began to set and all the other visitors drove off.

This was one of the best places to stargaze and we didn’t want to miss anything.

The sun set and it got dark. Really dark. We watched lights in the sky. Weird ones hovered in the distance and we couldn’t quite make out what they were. We tried to relax in our chairs and take in the night sky. We could see the Milky Way and it was fantastic!

We kept looking over our shoulders at those…

My brother’s divorce has been our bridge back together.

We come from a family of divorce. It was painful for everyone but as a child, you accept things for what they are, not what you think they should be. You don’t have any expectations. Societal pressures, while there, are not yet fully ingrained.

Everyone has their idea of the ideal family. We were raised in the ’70s and ’80s so, you were expected to get married (to someone of the opposite sex of course), have two kids, and be married forever. Easy. No big deal. Go on then.

Turns out, it’s not that easy. People continue to evolve through…

Travel. Mexico. Sayulita

It’s a jungle out there with land crabs. Literally.

We struggled to follow the map that the hotel had given us. It was a shortcut into town we were told. We were supposed to walk down the beach, away from everything that looked like civilization, turn right at the palapa, and head into the jungle. Um, okay, I guess.

“What the hell is a palapa?” My husband asked. I should’ve known these directions were not the best. Also, a palapa is a beach umbrella typically with a thatched covering on top. Like, an umbrella wearing a grass skirt.

Up into the jungle, we went. We hiked up to the…
