Gen X, grit, and pragmatism.

Huge helicopter blades swung around overhead. The Huey had been fired up and the blades were beginning to pick up speed. The engine whined and the blades thwacked through the air. Three other men jumped in and the pilot lifted off the ground carrying them off base to their intended destination…Hue City, Vietnam.

The men had asked for a Jeep to go explore the city and had been denied. They Huey, it turned out, would do.

Stationed at Camp Evans in 1970, they had jumped into a helicopter, radioed the tower, and flown there after they had been told they…

Your photos need work.

Dear Airbnb Host,

It is next-level exhausting to sort through hundreds of listings on Airbnb. I watch hours glide by as I scroll endlessly. I send listings to my husband. I go back to scrolling. The entire process can be frustrating.

Let me please address your photos. There are a few things that renters want.

First and foremost, clear photos that are not grainy and that are straight. I see a lot of crooked or sideways photos.

I want a wide shot of the front of the house. I want photos that show me an overview of the room. I…

Manage your building. Yes, you.

Photo by Liza Summer from Pexels

The company I work for lets me do whatever I want.

Well, let me rephrase that.

I follow all of their rules, I uphold and enforce all of their policies and procedures, I disseminate the information they give me, and then I make decisions for my building that I see fit. When upper management pop-visits my store, I do well. Then I get left alone. (I know, I get to do whatever I want, sounds way better.)

Retail managers get way too caught up in what they can or cannot do. They worry about getting in trouble. They worry about…

3,000 miles away, we were crushed.

“Your total is $10.76,” I told him. He paid cash. “Thanks, man,” I said and watched him walk out of the store into the empty mall.

My store manager and I looked at each other in silence. I shrugged my shoulders. Did he know yet? Did he care? Did he just really need sunglasses? We had no idea. We would never know. Neither one of us was going to be the one to break the news to him.

“Two planes have hit the World Trade Center. One building has collapsed and they are clearing out lower Manhattan”.

That was the…

It happens every day. Here’s why and how to break the chain.

Have you ever had a boss and thought, How did this person get promoted? How are they possibly in this job? They are terrible!

We all have. As it turns out, getting promoted is the easy part. Anyone can get promoted. You don’t even have to be good at your job, necessarily. Just show up, turn in assignments on time, chat with the boss, and let everyone know how hard you’re working. Work a lot over overtime, even if you don’t need to. The next time a position opens up, they’ll turn to you. Even if you’re terrible.

Why?

Because…

What are you even still doing there?

Facebook was in the news again today for being terrible.

Their artificial intelligence (AI) software has labeled Black men primates. What is even going on over there? When I read this latest headline I got angry. The kind of angry where your stomach starts to get hot and you can feel your hair follicles as they start to bead with sweat. That kind of angry.

I’ve hated Facebook for years but I only just deleted my account a few months ago. Mostly due to apathy. I just didn’t want to spend the 10 minutes it took to figure how to…

I’m over it.

Have you ever received exactly what you wanted? You had a vision for your future and it all came true? It doesn’t happen very often but it has happened to me.

My neighborhood is dope.

Coffee shops are within walking distance and every place is dog-friendly. Breweries are abundant. The coolest restaurants keep popping up down the street. Every type of food is about two blocks from me: French, ramen, Mexican, Asian. Whatever your mood, you can find it on my street.

I’m over it. I’m looking to get out.

Fifteen years ago we bought a condo in a sketchy…

Stop idolizing long marriages.

October is fast approaching. September is usually a blur and then all of a sudden the calendar flips. There we are…October.

My wedding anniversary is in October and this year we will celebrate 15 years. It’s cool. I can’t believe it’s been that long. 2006 does not seem that long ago. That’s what happens as you get older. Time has a funny way of speeding up.

I am ecstatic that we are still married! For a ton of reasons but mostly because it hasn’t always been easy and I love him more now than I did in 2006. I do…

TRAVEL. ALASKA

Alaska. 5 towns and 6 tours in 16 days: Anchorage, Denali, Seward, Homer, Girdwood

Here, sign this waiver releasing us from any responsibility if you die.

That is pretty much how every tour in Alaska starts. Most of the activities you sign up for are inherently risky. Listen to the instructions, keep your head on straight, stay sober, and you’ll be fine (probably).

I was a little scared to jump into some of these adventures but whatever, you know? I could just as easily die in a car accident so…let’s do this.

Alaska feels inherently dangerous because, well, bears — and a lot of open land. Alaska is bigger than Texas, California, and Montana…

Having a steady gig can be pretty cool.

There is an ungodly amount of content online that tells us that 9–5 jobs are lame. They tell us that working in an office is the worst. Everyone is over their commute and they are trying to convince you that you should be too.

There are a million people on the internet selling you the idea of remote work and freelance writing. Work from anywhere! You can write while traveling. Make your own schedule. Hang out in Bali and be a freelance writer.

I mean, it sounds good. Maybe I should be over my 9–5 also. I used to romanticize…
