Dear Road Trip,

I think I love you

The early morning creeps to my doorstep, bringing cool, crisp air. The car is packed, and the dog has been walked. He’s ready, and so am I. The road stretches out in front of me.

A few t-shirts and shorts are packed in a small bag next to a pillow, blanket, and extra snacks. Two gallons of water sit on the floor of the back seat.

The only things existing in the world at this moment is me, my dog, my car, and the open road.

See ya’ airports

No security check is needed. No waiting. No tiny seat. No lines or overpriced food. No dragging my luggage behind me everywhere I go.

It’s only me.

No sharing armrests or trying to open tiny snacks. No closed windows.

On a road trip, I go as fast as I want and stop wherever I like.

The journey is the reward

Winding through mountains, dropping down into the desert floor. Massive wind turbines tower overhead. A date shake awaits me at the halfway point.

The miles click by, and palm trees are replaced by saguaros.

Thinking about the destination brings me joy, but the road trip itself is a small reward of being alive.

Wide-open sky and truck stops. Scorpion lollipops or Slurpees that turn your tongue blue — it’s all available on the journey across the desert.

Small, dusty towns with bright murals and cheap coffee steal my attention, and I stop to chat with the locals. The dog jumps out and smells the dry earth. Before long, we jump in the car and head east.

Get in the driver’s seat

Back out and hit the highway. Driving is freedom. Being out on the road may bring answers you didn’t know you were looking for.

The vast open sky, a packed car, and a four-legged friend are pretty tough to beat.

Get to your destination dirtier and more sunburnt than you started but with a clear mind and open heart.

I’ve fallen in love with the road trip all over again.
